TrainingThe primary focus of all our sessions is surf life saving.
Summer training is undertaken at our club house on Southbourne beach. Winter training is indoors at the Bournemouth Collegiate School pool. During summer we concentrate on lifesaving awards and qualifications, including first aid and CPR, together with beach and sea training, to enable our members to use rescue boards, surf skis and inshore rescue boats to keep our community safe. Our winter training is about maintaining fitness and the surf life saving skills we put to good use in the summer. So the focus is on improving swimming techniques and building stamina, using rescue equipment such as tubes and practicing basic lifesaving skills. |
Awards and QualificationsOur Nipper and Youth training syllabus is based on SLSGB’s Nipper Lifesaver Pathway and The Graduate Lifeguard Programme.
Members 16 years and over are able to work towards the National Vocational Beach Lifeguard (NVBLQ) qualification required for employment as a professional beach lifeguard in the UK and abroad. Information about all awards and competencies can be found on the SLSGB website. |
Sport and Competition

We also train for Surf Life Saving Sport and enter local and national competitions, both in the pool and on the beach. Some years our members have also represented both club and country at international events.
Competition gives members an opportunity to practice lifesaving skills learnt in training, to meet members of other clubs and to receive coaching and top tips from other club’s trainers. |

Membership

The club has three sections:
Membership of each section is generally, but not strictly, decided using ages as at 1st January. All potential new members must be able to already swim 25m in a pool. The only exception being those over 18 who want to join the club to take on a voluntary role. We have many roles and tasks to undertake which need skills that are not specific to life saving, for example, administration, accountancy and building management. |
The club has a healthy membership and usually operates a waiting list for all groups. However, our waiting list for Nippers and Youth is now considerable and we are therefore not adding to it for the time being. All queries regarding Senior/Masters membership only should be made via our contact page.
Membership fees A monthly membership fee is payable by standing order.
